Late Summer Skincare: Hydration, Sun Recovery, and Transitioning to Fall

Updated: Aug 8

Late Summer Skincare

Simple rituals, seasonal rhythms, and a preview of what’s coming next.

At Byers Ranch Apothecary, we often say that skincare starts in the forest, and never is that more true than during the turning of the seasons. Late summer brings with it a particular kind of beauty: golden light, ripe herbs, sun-warmed soil, and the quiet beginnings of change.

It’s a time when our skin asks for a little more care. The sun has done its work and often, its damage. The air begins to shift. And the body, still grounded in summer heat, starts to crave the cool, the calm, and the steadying rituals that help us move toward autumn.

This is the perfect moment to look at late summer skincare and find ways to support your skin with a few simple, seasonal practices, ones that hydrate, restore, and gently prepare for the fall ahead.

Replenish What the Sun Took

Even with the best protection, summer sun takes its toll, leaving skin feeling parched, sensitive, and uneven in tone. This is the time to bring in moisture-rich, barrier-loving ingredients that can help replenish and soothe.

DIY Herbal After-Sun Facial Mist

Combine in a 2-oz spray bottle:

  • 1 oz aloe vera juice

  • 1 oz cooled chamomile or calendula tea

  • 5 drops lavender essential oil (optional)

Store in the fridge and mist generously after sun exposure, swimming, or whenever your skin needs a cool drink. Try pairing this with our Goddess Serum for lightweight hydration and sun-soothing botanicals.

Gentle Exfoliation for Brighter Skin

Heat and sweat can lead to clogged pores and dull texture, but over-exfoliating can make matters worse. Late summer calls for gentle exfoliation with nourishing ingredients that brighten without stripping.

DIY: Sugar & Honey Glow Scrub

In a small bowl, mix:

  • 1 tbsp raw honey

  • 1 tbsp fine sugar

  • A few drops of olive or jojoba oil

Massage gently onto damp skin in circular motions, then rinse with warm water.

Keep an eye out for our new seasonal launch: the Woodsmoke & Spiced Honey Sugar Scrub, a richly scented, gently exfoliating body treat perfect for cooler days.

Hydrate Deeply, and Consistently

As the air begins to shift toward fall dryness, daily hydration becomes your skin’s best friend. This is the time to switch from ultra-lightweight formulas to more nourishing balms and butters that lock in moisture and support the skin’s barrier.

Our upcoming Wild Harvest Body Butter was created with this in mind, a grounding blend of cardamom, fig, sandalwood, and cedar that smells like late-season sun and tall golden grasses. Whipped with rich butters and botanical oils, it’s the perfect way to hydrate deeply and intentionally. Look for it at select local markets of find it online when the fall collection launches next month.

Embrace Seasonal Transition Rituals

This is the season of soft shifts—the light changes. The wildflowers begin to seed. It’s a perfect moment to slow down and tune in,  not just to your skin, but to your rhythm, too.

Try a simple evening ritual that includes:

  • A warm cloth compress infused with dried chamomile

  • A slow application of herbal body oil or balm

  • A minute or two of stillness to check in with your body

And for your face? Keep an eye out for our Hello Pumpkin Brightening Mask. This seasonal favorite blends pumpkin enzymes, sea kelp, and skin-loving clays to gently exfoliate and reveal your glow before fall fully arrives.

Stock Up Before the Shift

If you’ve fallen in love with our summer staples, from Serum de Soleil to Flint & Peel Body Butter, now is the time to stock your shelves. These sun-loving formulas will make way for cozier offerings in the weeks ahead.
